Students come in the library all the time and ask for suggestions. Most of the time, I ask them what the last book they read (and liked) was. That helps me decide which direction to go. I have picked a few books ahead of time this year to be my "go to" books. Not all of these will appeal to everyone, but they are well-written, developed stories that I happened to enjoy myself.
Legend by Marie Lu
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Blue Plate Special by Pricilla Cummings
Something Like Hope by Shawn Goodman
Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride
Stay by Deb Caletti
Divergent by Veronica Roth (not one of my faves, but a lot of people really like it)
Across the Universe by Beth Revis
I am J by Cris Beam (a little different that most books)
There will be more as time goes by because I am always reading...
Have a great year, Cavaliers!
