2012 Summer Reading 

English 10 College Prep and English 10
Summer Reading is a required assignment in English 10 College Prep and is an extra credit assignment in English 10. Students must complete the Reading Log and the Analysis of Fiction Chart to receive credit for summer reading.

English 11 College Prep and English 11
Summer Reading is a required assignment in English 11 College Prep and is an extra credit assignment in English 11. Students should choose one of the texts listed below and be prepared on the first day of class, whether first or second semester, to discuss the text and to write critically about it.

  • Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
  • The Bean Trees, Barbara Kingsolver
  • Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer
  • Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux, John G. Neihardt
  • Saints at the River, Ron Rash
  • The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan 

English 12 College Prep and English 12
Summer Reading is a required assignment in English 12 College Prep and is an extra credit assignment in English 12. Students should choose one of the texts listed below and be prepared on the first day of class, whether first or second semester, to discuss the text and to write critically about it.

  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, C. S. Lewis
  • V for Vendetta (graphic novel), Alan Moore and David Lloyd 

World Literature
Summer reading is a required assignment. Students should choose one of the texts listed below and be prepared on the first day of class, whether first or second semester, to discuss the text and to write critically about it.

  • An Ordinary Man: An Autobiography, Paul Rusesabagina and Tom Zoellner
  • Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time, Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin 

English 10 Honors/Pre-AP
The required works for English 10 Honors are listed below. The texts should be purchased so that you may annotate them. Students in English 10 Honors must be prepared on the first day of class, whether first or second semester, to:
--Write critically about the works during class.
--Discuss the works analytically.
  • The Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane 
  • A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry English 
11 Honors
Students in English 11 Honors are required to read the tests listed below. Be prepared on the first day of class, whether first or second semester, to:
--Write critically about the works during class.
--Discuss the works analytically in class.

  • Brave New World, Aldous Huxley
  • Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte 

AP Language and Composition
The following readings are required for Advanced Placement English Language and Composition. Be prepared for an assignment on them on the first day of class. The texts should be purchased so that you may annotate them. You may order them online, or purchase them at a local bookstore. Call the store to be sure the texts are available.

  • Brave New World, Aldous Huxley
    • Mark what you find most significant or provocative in the book. 
  • Language in Thought and Action, S. I. and Alan R. Hayakawa 
    • Read Chapters 1-4. Other chapters will be assigned during the course. 

AP Literature and Composition
Students in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition must complete all three reading requirements below. The texts should be purchased so that you may annotate them. You may order the texts online, or you may purchase them at a local bookstore. Call the store to be sure the texts are available.

Be prepared to:
--Take a comprehension test.
--Write critically about the works during class.
--Discuss the works analytically.
